I get asked by ICErs what the fuel costs are for my Model S. Not sure if this has already been done but I did the math based on my SoCal Edison off peak energy rates and local gas prices to create an MPG equivalent. These calcs are based on the 55 mph ranges posted on the Tesla website. So now I can answer that if I was buying gas the fuel costs would be equiv to a 150 MPG car.

I did a similar (but a bit more elaborate) analysis of electricity usage and gas equivalence at http://EVTripPlanner.com/calcs.php (you can download spreadsheet or PDF) - you have to include "vampire load" when *not* driving and use real-world kWh/mile to be accurate. ALso: let me know how to get .09 $/kWh from SCE! Even super-off-peak with TOU-D-EV schedule runs about .11 (level/tier 1) and .19 (level/tier 2)

Thanks Cliff for vampire load. I also didn't factor in a charging inefficiency which seems like it is pretty high based on another post I saw here. Using an actual KWh/m number would correspond to a "city MPG" I think, the one calculated using the rated range more of a "highway MPG".

The SCE cost came from here for summer Super Off Peak. Must confess I didn't check my recent correspondence with them to check if the rate is what they gave me.

Updated the spreadsheet to factor in an inefficiency factor. I'd be shocked if the vampire loss isn't fixed fairly soon by a software update, as the Roadster vampire loss is negligible.
